Diamante is the grand-daddy of all
the monsters, built in 1990. After earning my BFA from the University
of North Carolina in Chapel Hill I found
myself cast into the world of real artists;
no more beautiful metal shop. I had no sheet
metal tools, no eight-foot hydraulic shears,
no finger-break, no roll. I didn't even
have oxy-acetylene tanks. I
renovated a kitchen for a friend and
bought a jigsaw, a grinder, and a torch.
It's impossible to cut a straight line
in sixteen gauge steel with a jigsaw so
I had to come up with a new dynamic. The
smooth geometric forms I had created in
college were impossible to fabricate with
hand tools. I decided to go the opposite
direction: rough cuts and dripping steel. Diamante is designed with flexibility in
his knees and hips so that if you push him,
he rocks gently in place. He
stands 86 inches tall.
E Stöl Cairevas
E Stöl is hanging from
the ceiling in a two-story great room in
front of a wall of windows. This is a shot
from directly beneath him. He is built to human proportions and
is the size of a six-foot man kneeling,
roughly 50 inches tall. E Stöl has also been displayed on the
floor, in fact that is the way he was designed.
He kneels, back arched, wings outspread,
head looking down and away.
Three Toed Snorglethorp
Three-toed stands 65 inches tall.
Gabriel
The newest and smallest of the angels,
Gabriel stands 15 inches tall.
